The National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) operates in UK construction industry and issues NPORS Cards to construction workers with the appropriate qualifications for their roles.

Established in 1992 NPORS is now one of the UK’s leading accreditation and registration bodies providing training courses across a wide variety of sectors, maintaining high standards, both nationally and internationally.

NPORS Trained Operator Card

The NPORS Trained Operator Card is issued on successful completion of the CPS Theory and Practical tests which must be taken with a NPORS accredited test centre.

Before taking the technical tests the relevant CITB Health, Safety and Environment test must have been completed within the past two years.

Once the NPORS Technical tests have been completed an NPORS Trained Operator Card will be issued and is valid for two years.

A TRAINED OPERATOR DEMONSTRATES

  • Health and safety awareness through the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test
  • Underpinning knowledge and understanding through the NPORS Theory Test
  • Operating ability through the NPORS Practical Test
NPORS Trained Operator

NPORS Competent Operator Card

The NPORS Competent Operator card shows employers that you are competent to operate your chosen plant vehicle. It demonstrates that you have the skills to use the machinery, have the Health & Safety Awareness and real world experience.

This NPORS card is an upgrade from the Trained Operator card which is only valid for 2 years, during which time you are required to undertake the relevant National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in order to upgrade. An NVQ demonstrates your competence to carry out your job to the required standard.

The NPORS Competent Operator card is valid for 5 years starting from the date the application was received. Each category added to the card will have the expiry date of the card.

A COMPETENT OPERATOR DEMONSTRATES

  • Health and safety awareness through the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test
  • Underpinning knowledge previously through a theory test
  • Operating ability previously through a practical test
  • Operating competence on the type of plant (evidenced by an SVQ or NVQ or employer confirmation of competence)

Renewing a NPORS Competent Operator Card

The Competent Operator card is valid for 5 years and can be renewed. This should be done before the current card expires, the requirements to renew the card are as follows:

  • Hold a valid Competent Operator Card that has not expired
  • Pass the CITB Health, Safety and environment test (within two years of the card application)
  • Pass the NPORS Renewal Test for each category held
  • Demonstrate on-going practical operating experience through a choice of routes including Logbook, On-Site Assessment, NPORS Practical Test, NVQ.
