EUSR HDD Locator Tracker Operator

The HDD Locator/Tracker course provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills required to safely locate, track and monitor an underground drill head during horizontal directional drilling operations.

The course covers the correct preparation and use of locating equipment, interpretation of tracking data, bore-plan monitoring and communication with the drill-rig operator. Learners will develop the ability to recognise unreliable signals, interference, unsafe conditions and deviations from the approved bore plan, taking appropriate action when necessary.

Training combines underpinning knowledge with practical exercises using a compatible tracker, transmitter and remote display. On successful completion, learners should be able to carry out pre-use checks, track a pilot bore, provide clear steering information, maintain accurate bore records and respond correctly to abnormal or emergency situations.

COURSE INFORMATION

The EUSR HDD Locator Tracker Operator course delivers a solid foundation level knowledge and understanding, of the concept and complexities of Horizontal Directional Drilling.

It is envisaged that by the end of this course of training the learner will be able to answer questions on and perform the following:

• Understand the HDD industry, the hazards associated with locating and tracking, and the locator/tracker’s responsibilities.
• Use the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular locating system, transmitter and remote display.
• Identify the locating-system components and explain their functions, limitations and compatibility.
• Carry out pre-use inspection, function checks, calibration/depth verification and interference assessment.
• Interpret transmitter signal, roll/clock position, pitch, depth, temperature, battery and telemetry information correctly.
• Plan and confirm the bore route, entry/exit points, target depths, clearances, tolerances and no-drill zones.
• Select and use suitable PPE and maintain safe positioning, exclusion zones and situational awareness.
• Locate and track the drill head using the manufacturer-approved method and provide timely steering information.
• Maintain continuous, clear communication with the drill-rig operator and stop work when information is unreliable or conditions are unsafe.
• Recognise active/passive interference, signal distortion, ghost signals, depth limitations and loss of telemetry.
• Record rod-by-rod bore data and confirm the completed pilot bore against the approved bore plan.
• Respond correctly to a suspected service strike, electric strike or other emergency.
• Clean, inspect, store and report defects in the locating equipment at the end of the shift.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

This course is designed for Operatives that work alongside Horizontal Direction Drilling Rigs to give them the knowledge and practical skills required to safely locate, track and monitor an underground drill head during horizontal direction drilling operations.

ASSESSMENT

EUSR assessments are multiple choice and structured so that there is a practical & theory assessment per unit.

CERTIFICATION

Learners will receive an EUSR photo ID card with the qualification stated on the back.

EUSR registration is valid for three years.
